AUSTIN, Texas - Adam Klie of the University of California San Diego has been named the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America of the Year for NCAA Division II men's basketball. The announcement was made Wednesday by CoSIDA.
A senior bioengineering major with a 4.0 GPA, Klie is making his second straight appearance on the Academic All-America First Team.
In the midst of a sensational season on the court, the guard leads the Tritons in scoring (14.9 points/game), rebounding (6.4), assists (4.5), steals (0.8) and field goal percentage (.495). Klie has scored at least 10 points in 23 of 28 games played, including a career-high 29 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament win against Humboldt State on Feb. 28.
During his 2016-17 campaign, Klie became UCSD's Division II-era (since the 2000-01 season) career leader in points, rebounds and field goals made.
Klie has been a key player in helping UC San Diego win its first ever CCAA regular season championship in 2017. The team also set a new program record with 17 conference victories.
Hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, Klie is a two-time All-CCAA performer and was tabbled the CCAA Freshman of the Year in 2014. He is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District pick.
A total of 15 Division II men's basketball players were selected Academic All-America in 2017 - five on the first team, five on the second team and five on the third team.
Klie is UC San Diego's second ever Academic All-America of the Year honoree. Swimmer Mark Latronica earned the distinction during the 2000-01 season, the Tritons' first as an NCAA Division II member.
Overall, UC San Diego has produced 74 Academic All-America honorees.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his or her institution.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and the NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
