Torrid Shooting Leads UCSD to 82-70 Win at Cal State Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's basketball team made 64 percent of its shots en route to an 82-70 league victory against Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday night at the Torodome.

With its third-straight victory, UC San Diego improves to 18-5 on the season and 13-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Dominguez Hills falls to 11-10 and 7-8.

UCSD, which never trailed in the game, netted 34 of 53 shots overall to record a season-best 64.2 shooting percentage. The Tritons were 9-for-16 from behind the three-point line, 56.3 percent.

UC San Diego built a 25-point lead in the second half when a Chris Hansen layup made it 66-41 at the 11:09 mark. However, the Tritons had to fight off a fierce comeback bid. A 25-7 run by the Toros had them within seven points, 73-66, with just 2:33 left in the game. UCSD responded by scoring the next seven points - five of those coming from Hansen - to seal the win.

"We were really sharp on the offensive end tonight," said UCSD head coach Eric Olen. "We could have executed better defensively, but Dominguez Hills deserves credit for creating problems for us and fighting back. We feel fortunate to have held on and come away with a road win."

Hansen finished his night with a team-best 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Three other Tritons scored in double digits including Scott Everman (14), Adam Klie (12) and George Buaku (11). Klie also had six rebounds and seven assists, both game-highs.

CSUDH was 28-for-59, 47.5 percent, from the field. Dharion Tanner scored a game-high 19 points, while Justin Sadler had 16 and Deondre Otis totaled 10.

UCSD swept the regular season series as it also defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 78-75, back in December.

UC San Diego, which has clinched a berth in the upcoming CCAA Tournament, plays at Cal State LA (13-12, 8-8) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Tritons beat the Golden Eagles, 79-69, on Dec. 29 in La Jolla.
