LA JOLLA, Calif. - A late rally lifted the 23rd-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team to a 67-57 win against league rival Stanislaus State Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
The victory elevated UC San Diego's overall record to 11-2 and kept the Tritons undefeated in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at 6-0. With its second loss in as many days, Stan State dropped to 4-8 on the season and 1-4 in the league.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the game and UCSD down by a point (48-47), Adam Klie hit a pair of free throws to kick off a 13-1 run that put the Tritons ahead by 11 points, 60-49, with 4:38 left. Back-to-back-to-back three-pointers, one by George Buaku and two by Christian Oshita, highlighted the run that sealed the victory.
Oshita ended his night with a game-high 19 points. He made five treys while adding seven rebounds, three assists and a steal. Chris Hansen totaled 16 points and Klie had 14 to go along with a game-high eight boards as well as five assists. Buaku also dished out five assists.
UC San Diego shot just 36.5 percent (19-52) from the field with 11 of its 19 made baskets coming from behind the three-point line. It was the fifth time this season that the Tritons drained 10 or more threes. They were 18-of-20 from the free throw line and out-rebounded their opponent 35-27.
Stanislaus State was led offensively by Jaelen Ragsdale, who netted 17 points. Kyle Gouveia had 11 points and Richard Medina chipped in with 10. Vondel Faniel grabbed eight rebounds and Keiland Callum had four assists.
The Warriors shot 41.7 percent (20-48). Their largest lead was five points in the opening half.
UCSD led 31-27 at the intermission.
With its six-game home stand now complete, UC San Diego plays six of its next seven on the road, beginning on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Cal State Monterey Bay.
