LA JOLLA, Calif. - Chris Hansen drilled a three-pointer with just over a second left in the game to lift the 20th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team to a 78-75 conference win against Cal State Dominguez Hills Monday at RIMAC Arena.
UC San Diego moved to 9-2 overall and remained undefeated in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at 4-0. CSUDH fell to 5-4 and 1-2.
UCSD led by as many as 13 points early in the second half and was up by 12, 68-56, with 6:21 remaining in the game. However, the Toros went on a 19-7 run over the next six minutes, ending with a Vincent Golson layup that tied it at 75-75 with 22 ticks left.
Following a timeout, Adam Klie got the ball to Hansen at the top of the three-point line. The sophomore center set and nailed his second trey of the game to give the lead back to the Tritons. With just 1.4 seconds left, Cal State Dominguez Hills was not able to get off an effective shot.
Hansen, the reigning CCAA Freshman of the Year, finished with 24 points and seven rebounds, both game-highs. He went 10-for-11 shooting and added two assists and two blocks in 29 minutes on the floor. Hansen has netted 20-plus points in four of his last five outings.
Freshman forward Scott Everman completed his night with 14 points, 12 of those coming on three-pointers. Klie, a senior guard, had 11 points, seven assists, and four rebounds for UC San Diego.
The Tritons made a season-best 13 threes with seven players hitting at least one. They shot 54 percent (30-56) overall and turned the ball over just four times, their fewest since January of 2014.
CSUDH, which led by nine points mid-way through the first half, got 21 points from Khalil Bedart-Ghani. Three other Toros hit double figures including Justin Sadler (17), Golson (16) and Dharion Tanner (16).
Dominguez Hills shot 51 percent (28-55) and held a 31-25 advantage in rebounds.
UC San Diego is off until Thursday, Dec. 29 when it hosts CCAA rival Cal State LA at 7:30 p.m.
