SAN DIEGO - Competing against NCAA Division I competition, University of California San Diego tennis players Richard Han and Edvin Larsson won the second doubles flight at the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State Friday through Sunday.
Han and Larsson competed against Austin Bates and Sam Chaffin from Florida Gulf Coast in the final match-up and took the championship with an 8-4 win.
The duo began its flight sweep by defeating SDSU's Raul De La Torre and David Hough, 8-4. The pair then faced Philip Kuehnen and Rafa Lira of Grand Canyon and defeated them, 8-2.
Marius Ruh and Justin Zhang also participated in the flight, but were handed two losses versus a duo from USD and a mixed pair from UC Irvine and Grand Canyon. The scores were 8-0 and 8-5, respectively.
UC San Diego unfortunately saw no luck in the championship round of the first doubles flight, garnering no victories in four matches. In the consolation round, Rodrigo Amaral and Sreeganesh Manoharan fell to the GCU pair of Justin Cvitanovic and Valentin Lang, 8-4. Marc Isaia and Eric Tseng lost to a UCI team, 8-3.
Three Tritons picked up wins in the number one singles consolation draw, including Isaia, Tseng and Zhang.
Larsson was able to advance to the final match of the second doubles consolation bracket by defeating Sam Chaffin of Florida Gulf Coast (7-5, 6-0) and Garrett Kurtz of USD (6-2, 7-5). Valentin Lang of Grand Canyon ended up taking the top spot, defeating Larsson, 6-2 and 6-4.
Also in the second singles flight consolation, Han defeated Sam Chaffin of Florida Gulf Coast (6-4, 6-4) to make it to the round of eight. There, Reid Ponder (independent) ended up besting Han in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).
The Tritons will be back in action on Oct. 27 for the SoCal Intercollegiate Tournament in Los Angeles.
