LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team swept San Francisco State Friday evening to win its sixth-consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match and remain unbeaten in league play.
Scores from RIMAC Arena went 25-18, 25-21 and 25-19. UC San Diego is now 9-5 overall and 6-0 in the CCAA, while a struggling SFSU fell to 1-13 and 0-6.
Rebecca Seaberry paced the Tritons offensively, collecting 12.5 points on eight kills, five blocks (two solos) and a service ace. The junior middle blocker hit .316 with two errors in 19 attacks.
Freshman Simone Froley totaled 11 points on eight kills and six block assists, while classmate Emily Kimball had 10.5 points with eight kills and five block assists. Freshman libero Lindsey Chun led all players with 20 digs.
As a team, the Tritons out-blocked the Gators 11-7 and hit .244 (43-14-119) while holding their opponent to a .123 (38-23-122) attack.
Haley Halpert had a match-best 14 kills and Christine Johnson added 12 for San Francisco State. Johnson tallied 12 digs for the lone double-double of the match, while Emily Johns posted a team-high with 15 digs.
In the opening set, UC San Diego led 11-6, but San Francisco State grabbed six of the next seven points to tie it up at 12-12. However, the Tritons hit their own rally and won eight of the next 10 scores to take a 20-14 advantage. The Gators could not recover again and would get no closer than five points the rest of the way. UCSD hit .256 (15-4-43) in the set, its highest of the match.
The Tritons rolled to a 6-0 start in set two. Sophomore Kayla Evans (San Diego/Del Norte HS) had two aces and the Gators made three hitting errors during the run. UC San Diego would never relinquish its lead, but San Francisco State got back within a single point twice, the first at 15-14 and again at 22-21. The Tritons closed it out with three-straight points, two of those coming off blocks involving Froley.
Set three saw SFSU get its first and only lead of the night when a Johnson kill made it 2-1. It was short-lived as the Tritons had three big runs to put them up by a score of 19-8. Yet again, San Francisco State got itself back in the game, winning eight of the next 10 points to trail by five at 21-16. Two Gator errors and a Seaberry kill brought UCSD to match point at 24-16. SFSU snatched the next three points, but senior Shaelyn Perez ended it with her first kill of the season.
It is just the third time that the Tritons have gone 6-0 to start their CCAA season since joining the conference in 2000. The team was 18-0 in league action in 2004 and began its 2001 campaign with six victories before suffering a loss.
UC San Diego hosts Sonoma State (5-8, 3-3) Saturday at 7 p.m. The Seawolves lost in four sets at Cal State San Marcos Friday.
