CLAREMONT, Calif. - The 12th-ranked University of California San Diego men's water polo team opened the Gary Troyer Tournament with a 12-8 win against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Friday at the Stags' Axelrood Pool. The Tritons dropped the second game of the day to No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer by a final score of 10-8.
With the split, UCSD moves to 8-5 overall. CMS drops to 4-11 and Pomona-Pitzer improves to 8-6.
UC San Diego 12, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 8
After a 2-2 deadlock at the end of the first quarter, UCSD outscored CMS 10-6 to earn a 12-8 victory.
Senior Jack Ellinthorpe led the Tritons and recorded his second hat trick of the season with a game-high four goals. Sophomore Kevin Asplund got his first career hat trick with three goals. Sophomore Carson Ivancovich pitched in two and freshman Cooper Milton, junior Rich Farley and freshman David Albers had one each. Redshirt sophomore goalie Jack Turner compiled six saves.
Eric Bakar was the Stags' leading scorer, putting away three. CMS goalie Rye Newman amassed six stops.
UCSD got the first two goals of the game from Ivancovich and Ellinthorpe, but the Stags answered back with two of their own to tie things up at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.
CMS grabbed its first and only lead of the game in the second period, 4-3, thanks to two goals from Bakar. The Tritons closed out the quarter with three straight scores, including a five-meter penalty shot converted by Ellinthorpe to complete his hat trick and a catch-and-shoot put in by Milton with 14 seconds left, to take a 6-4 lead at halftime.
UCSD continued the offensive onslaught in the third, outscoring the Stags 6-1 to go up 12-5. Asplund found the back of the cage three times in the period to record a hat trick. The lone CMS goal in the frame came when Turner was ejected, leaving the Tritons without a goalie.
UCSD did not score in the fourth and allowed three goals, but the lead was insurmountable for the Stags as UCSD won by four.
Pomona-Pitzer 10, UC San Diego 8
With the game even at 7-7 in the middle of the fourth quarter, Pomona-Pitzer put away three goals in the final five minutes to win, 10-8. The Tritons fell to the Sagehens for the first time in program history, having won 35 straight coming into the match.
The Tritons were led by freshman Skyler Munatones and senior Andy Moore who each had a hat trick with three scores. The other two Triton goals came from redshirt freshman Kacper Langiewicz and senior Nick Alexander.
Timmy Hardman was the top scorer for the Sagehens with three. Noah Deer and Ellison Taylor pitched in two each.
The two teams exchanged two goals each in the first quarter, with both teams scoring one in the final 30 seconds. Munatones put away a five-meter penalty with 25 seconds left and Hardman got one with 10 ticks remaining.
Pomona-Pitzer took a 4-3 lead into halftime, thanks to goals from Schafer and Niskey. UCSD's score in the period came from Alexander.
UCSD evened it up in the third, 5-5, but the Sagehens were able to get another late goal, this time with 16 seconds remaining, to lead by one heading into the final frame.
With the score tied 7-7 in the final quarter, Pomona-Pitzer went on a 3-1 run to conclude the game.
The Tritons will wrap up the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 8 with a single match against Penn State Behrend, starting at 11:45 a.m.
