LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 15th-ranked University of California San Diego men's water polo team could not be stopped offensively and defeated Concordia in a Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) matchup by a final score of 21-7, Thursday at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
UC San Diego remains undefeated in conference play with a 5-0 record and improves to 11-6 overall. The Eagles drop to a 4-12 overall record and 0-2 in the WWPA.
The Tritons had 12 different goal scorers led by seniors Jack Ellinthorpe and Andy Moore who put away four each. Sophomore Collin Sullivan (Escondido/San Pasqual HS) added three and freshman David Albers had two. Redshirt sophomore goalie Jack Turner had eight saves. Junior goalie Oleg Koujikov came on in relief for Turner in the fourth quarter and compiled four saves.
Nick Walker and Spencer Hosch were Concordia's leading scorers with two. Goalie Zackary Schall made five stops. Cullen Mooers took over for Schall in the third and had one save. Andrew Parese went in for Mooers in the fourth, but did not record a save.
The Eagles kept it close in the first period, 3-2, before UCSD scored two straight, including a five-meter penalty shot converted by senior Nassim Hmeidan, for a three-goal advantage. Concordia was able to put one away before the end of the period as the Tritons led 5-3 after the first quarter.
UCSD fired home five goals in the second frame and limited Concordia to one in the period to take a 10-4 lead at halftime. Two of the Triton scores in the period came from Moore to complete his hat trick.
UCSD started to pull away in the third, shutting out the Eagles 7-0 in the quarter for a 17-4 advantage. Ellinthorpe and Sullivan completed their hat tricks in the period.
The Tritons allowed three Concordia goals in the final frame, but were able to get four themselves to win by a margin of 14.
UCSD will conclude its regular-season home schedule against No. 19 UC Irvine this Sunday, Oct. 23, at 12 p.m. Ellinthorpe, Hmeidan, Moore and Nick Alexander will be recognized prior to the start on Senior Day at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
