SAN FRANCISCO - The No. 17 UC San Diego men's basketball team made a season-high 54.2 percent of its shots and drained 11 three-pointers en route to a 73-48 road victory at San Francisco State Thursday night.
UCSD was hot from everywhere on the floor. The Tritons made 26 of 48 shots overall and went 52 percent (11-21) from behind the three-point arc and 77 percent (10-13) from the charity stripe.
In contrast, SFSU shot just 26.8 percent (15-56), the second-lowest of any UCSD opponent this season.
"It was great to get a conference win on the road," said UC San Diego head coach Eric Olen. "Offensively, we shot the ball well and got contributions from a lot of guys."
UC San Diego led the entire way. Just 44 seconds into a scoreless game, Aleks Lipovic was fouled on a three-point attempt and netted all of his free throws to get UCSD out to a 3-0 lead. Lipovic had nine of his game-high 16 points in the opening stanza and helped the Tritons to a 35-20 advantage at the break.
With 3:42 remaining in the game, Drew Dyer nailed a trey that ignited a 12-3 Triton run to close out the night. Koree Cox hit a three with :20 on the clock to account for the final 25-point spread, UCSD's largest of the contest.
Adam Klie totaled 12 points for the Tritons, while Cox and Grant Jackson finished with 10 apiece. Dyer (3), Lipovic (3), George Buaku (2) and Jackson (2) all hit multiple three-pointers. Klie added five assists.
The 11 three-pointers tied a season-high for UC San Diego. It was the ninth time that the Tritons hit at least 50 percent of their shots from the floor.
Jon McMurray led the Gators with 14 points and Warren Jackson had 11. Treaven Duffy led all players with seven rebounds.
UCSD out-rebounded SFSU 36-31, but the Gators held a 16-9 edge on the offensive end.
"I thought we did a good job on defense, but I'd like us to rebound better," said Olen. "Overall, I'm pleased with our effort."
The win moved UC San Diego to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. SF State dropped to 7-5 and 1-5.
UCSD plays at Cal State L.A. (2-10, 1-4 CCAA) Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
