LA JOLLA, Calif. - A season-high shooting percentage and 17 points each from Drew Dyer and Adam Klie led the No. 17 UC San Diego men's basketball team to a 79-55 win against Cal State L.A. Saturday evening at RIMAC Arena.
As has been the case for most of the season, UCSD made over half of its shots, finishing at 54.5 percent (24-44) to top its previous high of 54.2. The Tritons drained 60 percent (15-25) of their attempts in the first half, including eight of 10 from long range. Their 12 three-pointers and .632 (12-19) three-point field goal percentage were also season bests.
Dyer made all five of his shots, four of those coming from the three-point zone. Klie was 6-for-12 with a trio of threes and five assists. Chris Hansen (12) and Aleks Lipovic (10) also finished with 10 or more points, while Grant Jackson had a career-high six assists.
The win put UC San Diego at 15-3 overall and 10-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), leaving the Tritons alone in first place with eight league games remaining.
For CSULA (3-15, 2-9), Duce Zaid had 15 points and six boards, while Joshua Munzon added 10 points. The Golden Eagles, who got 34 points from their bench, shot at a 36.5 percent (19-52) clip.
Cal State L.A. scored the first bucket of the game, but that would be its only lead of the night. Hansen tied it with a jumper and Klie followed with a three to put UCSD up 5-2 and the Tritons stayed in front until the final buzzer. They led 44-29 at the break.
At the 16:22 mark of the second half, a three-pointer by Dyer gave UCSD a 54-33 advantage, the first time the Tritons led by 20 or more points. With just over a minute left in the game, Koree Cox made a free throw to put them up by 26 (79-53), the team's largest lead of the contest.
UCSD also defeated Cal State L.A. on Jan. 9 in Los Angeles (78-64).
UC San Diego is on the road next week for key league match-ups, playing at Humboldt State on Jan. 28 and Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 30.
