Tritons Win Gold at North American Cup!

ST. LOUIS - A gold medal performance by the women's saber squad highlighted several solid results as the UC San Diego fencing team competed at the North American Cup, Jan. 8-11 in St. Louis.

In the Women's Saber Senior Team event, the Triton trio of Lillian Chu, Leanne Singleton-Comfort and Savanah Tiffany - all freshmen - combined to take first place. UCSD defeated Jiangsu Fencing Team, 45-44, to earn the gold.

Singleton-Comfort was UC San Diego's top placer in Junior Women's Saber and Division I Women's Saber, finishing 10th and 24th, respectively.

Sophomore David Hadler tied for 11th in a 196-competitor field in Division I Men's Foil. Hadler won three consecutive direct elimination bouts before falling to Olympian and 2013 World Champion Miles Chamley-Watson, who went on to take silver. Stanford's Alexander Massialis, also an Olympian, won the event.

Hadler was also strong in Junior Men's Foil, finishing eighth of 173 competitors. He went 6-0 in pool play to earn a No. 15 seeding heading into the direct elimination rounds. Following a bye in the opening round, Hadler won four straight bouts. He lost to Canada's Daniel Gu, the eventual silver medalist.

Freshman Thejas Gulati was 21st and classmate Evan George tied for 62nd in Junior Men's Saber.

UC San Diego is back in action on Sunday, Jan. 17, as it hosts the West Invitational at RIMAC Arena. The event will also serve as the Western Fencing Conference (WFC) Team Championship. The Triton women topped the conference last season, while the men placed second.

Along with UCSD, the WFC is comprised of Air Force, Caltech, Incarnate Word and Stanford.
