LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 10 UC San Diego men's water polo team concluded the final day of the Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center with a 15-6 win over Redlands and a 16-5 loss against No. 3 Cal Sunday.
Game One – UCSD 15, Redlands 6
The Tritons, led by Chase Cockerill's hat trick, were able to defeat Redlands 15-6 after a slow start. Nine different players found the back of the cage for UCSD.
The two teams were tied at 2-2 in the first quarter until Matt Shippen scored with one second remaining in the period to take an early 3-2 lead for the Bulldogs.
UCSD was able to turn things around in the second quarter, shutting out Redlands 4-0. The scores came from Cockerill, Cole Martinez, Tiki Toplak and Andy Moore to go into halftime 6-3.
The Tritons were able to keep the foot on the throttle, outscoring the Bulldogs 9-3 in the second half to win the game by nine points, 15-6.
In the fourth quarter, freshman Sam Thompson came in for redshirt freshman Jack Turner at goalkeeper.Turner recorded three saves and Thompson got one.
Cockerill led all scorers in the game with three goals. Martinez, Toplak, Moore and Nick Alexander recorded two scores each.
Shippen and Ty Williams each had two goals for Redlands. Chris Sekula compiled 10 saves.
Game Two – Cal 16, UCSD 5
The Golden Bears came out strong and never looked back, beating the Tritons, 16-5.
Cal's Colin Mulcahy completed a hat trick in the opening quarter to help his team go up 6-2. UCSD's scores in the period came from Jack Ellinthorpe and Nassim Hmeidan. The Golden Bears shut out the Tritons and scored four times from four different individuals in the second quarter to go into halftime 10-2.
The offensive onslaught didn't stop there as the Golden Bears went for six more goals in the second half. UCSD fought hard, scoring once in the third quarter and twice as Martinez, Kevin Asplund and Collin Sullivan found the back of the cage.
Cal's Mulcahy led all scorers with five goals. Thomas Carroll and Nicholas Carniglia each scored three times for the Golden Bears and Peter O'Laughlin had 13 saves.
Thompson had seven saves and Turner amassed three for the Tritons.
