LA JOLLA, Calif. - Three Tritons recorded a double-double as the UC San Diego women's volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 league victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday evening at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 25-17, 25-15 and 25-20.
UCSD, which has now won five of its last six matches, is 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Tritons are tied for first place with Cal Poly Pomona and No. 17 Cal State San Bernardino.
CSUDH dropped to 3-11 on the year and 1-5 in conference tilts.
Friday, UC San Diego used strong blocking and serving to sweep No. 25 Cal State L.A. Tonight, the Tritons' defense was key as the team amassed 61 digs while the Toros finished with 33. UCSD also held a huge .250 (47-21-104) to .078 (22-14-103) advantage in hitting percentage.
Meagan Wright (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) led all players with 14 kills and 15.5 points. She also added 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.
Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) notched her sixth double with 13 kills and 12 digs while hitting .346 (13-4-26). She owned her double-double before the third set even started.
Setter Heidi Sierks picked up her seventh double-double as well, assisting on 37 kills and digging 13 balls.
It was the third-consecutive double-double for both Sierks and Wright. Wright has one in six of her last seven outings and has registered a double-digit kill total in 12 of 13 matches played.
Libero Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito HS) totaled 13 digs to even Sierks for the match-high.
Alijah Gunsaulus led the Toros with six kills and Dana Brown had eight digs.
UCSD hit .419 (17-4-31) in the first set. The Tritons got out to a 6-2 start and then led 16-5 following an eight-point run. Bailey Turk was serving during seven of the eight points and Dahle had four kills during the burst.
In the second set, UC San Diego had a service error followed by three consecutive attack errors to give CSUDH a 7-6 lead. However, the Tritons won the next seven points to take the lead for good. Dahle added another three kills to her total during the run.
The third frame was the most competitive as both squads hit poorly with UC San Diego at .026 (13-12-38) and Cal State Dominguez Hills at -.083 (4-7-36). The Toros ran out to a 4-1 lead, but the Tritons scored five of the next six points to go up 6-5. CSUDH answered right back with a five-point run to take a 10-6 advantage. After getting back in it but still down 17-16, a kill by Kameron Cooper and a pair of Toro errors gave UCSD a lead that would not be dropped.
UCSD will cover some miles on its road trip next week as the Tritons play at Humboldt State (5-5, 3-3) on Oct. 1 and at Sonoma State (7-3, 3-1) on Oct. 3.
