SAN FRANCISCO - In a key NCAA Division II West Region match-up Friday, the No. 17 UC San Diego women's tennis team was defeated, 8-1, by No. 11 Academy of Art at the San Francisco Tennis Club.
With the victory, ART U improved to 6-3 overall. UCSD fell to 11-8. The Urban Knights are ranked third in the West and the Tritons are just behind in fourth.
Academy of Art swept the doubles contests to get out to a 3-0 lead. In the first spot, the 14th-ranked duo of Britta Mosser and Kyra Scott were downed by Nina Gajdosikova and Annika Schneider, 8-5. The Triton pair is 10-7 this season with all 17 matches coming at No. 1.
Scott, ranked eighth nationally in singles, was forced to retire due to injury in the first set of her No. 1 match against Gajdosikova. It was the just the third loss of the year for the junior, who holds a stellar 13-3 mark.
The Tritons' point came at No. 2 singles. Jasmine Hosseini picked up the victory as Lucia Zavarcikova retired. Hosseini won the opening set, 7-6, and the second frame was tied at 3-3 when Zavarcikova retired. The freshman is 13-5 on the season.
At No. 5, Nousha Nowamooz forced a third set against Dorota Markowska. Markowska won the first set by a score of 6-2, but Nowamooz returned the favor, taking the second by the same score. Markowska was able to earn the victory with a 10-6 win in the tiebreaker.
UCSD concludes a three-match road trip at No. 24 Sonoma State Saturday (12 p.m.). The Tritons defeated the Seawolves, 8-1, in La Jolla on March 7.
