Scott and Mosser Win Doubles Competition at USTA/ITA West Regionals

LOS ANGELES - The UC San Diego duo of Kyra Scott and Britta Mosser won the doubles competition at the USTA/ITA West Regional Championships. The event was hosted by Cal State L.A. Thursday through Saturday.

After a first-round bye, Scott and Mosser blanked Kelsey Markle and Layla Accorsi of Concordia, 8-0. In the quarterfinals, the pair took down Azusa Pacific's team of Lilit Vardanyan and Schneider, 8-3.

Scott and Mosser defeated Regina van Koch and Nikki Newell from Point Loma, 8-5, to advance to the finals. The duo defeated Sonoma State's Jensyn Warren and Jordyn Kearney, 8-5, to take first in the region.

“(It is a) huge accomplishment winning the doubles against some very strong teams,” said head coach Liz LaPlante. “We were the No. 1 seed and they (Scott and Mosser) had lost in the finals last year.”

In singles, Scott took care of Hillary Fazekas of SSU, 6-0 and 6-2, and PLNU's van Koch, 6-2 and 6-1, after a bye in the round of 64.

Scott defeated Liza Sokolova of CSULA in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1, to advance to the final four. In the semifinals, APU's Natalie Johnson downed Scott in three sets, 1-6, 6-3 and 7-6.

Fellow Triton Jasmine Hosseini took care of SSU's Karly Budge, 6-1 and 6-2, and Paula Alcantra of Academy of Art in three by scores of 7-6 , 3-6 and 6-1 after a first-round bye. Academy of Art's Annika Schneider eliminated Hosseini in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-2 and 10-4.

“I'm very impressed with the overall performance of the team, specifically Kyra Scott and Jasmine Hosseini in the singles,” LaPlante said. “Kyra lost in three sets in the semis to the eventual winner and Jasmine lost in a close three setter in the quarters.”

Scott and Mosser advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, which will be held Oct. 15-18 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina. The national championship event will include all eight regional champions from the NCAA Division II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.
