LA JOLLA, Calif. - Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) became UC San Diego's career kills leader as the Tritons defeated Chico State, 3-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's volleyball action Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
Scores of the match were 25-12, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-20. UCSD improved to 12-9 overall and 8-5 in the CCAA, while Chico State fell to 16-7 and 8-5.
Dahle, a senior outside hitter, finished the night with a career-high 28 kills, giving her 1,366 as a Triton. She surpassed Rebecca Bailey, who totaled 1,364 between 2005 and 2008. The record-breaking kill got UCSD back within a point at 15-14 in the fourth set, with the assist going to setter Heidi Sierks. It ended a four-point Chico run and began a sequence that saw the Tritons win seven of the next eight.
Dahle was on fire all night, posting a .410 hitting percentage with only three errors in 61 attacks. She also completed her 10th double-double of the season by adding 11 digs.
Meagan Wright (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) also put together an impressive all-around effort, finishing with 17 kills and 24 digs to notch her 13th double-double. Sierks had 55 assists and 18 digs for her team-leading 14th double-double. Libero Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito HS) led all players with 28 digs.
As a team, UC San Diego hit .274 (65-17-175), which included a .375 (17-2-40) clip in the fourth set. The Tritons held a 96-86 advantage in the digs department and out-blocked the Wildcats 6-2.
Chico State got 16 kills from Shannon Boling and 13 from Olivia Mediano. Five players had 10 or more digs, led by Torey Thompson's 22.
The Wildcats hit .158 (54-23-196).
The win moved UC San Diego into a four-team tie for third place in the CCAA. At 8-5, the Tritons are even with Cal Poly Pomona, Chico State and SF State. The top eight teams in the regular season standings qualify for the inaugural league tournament, which will be hosted by UCSD Nov. 19-21.
UCSD hosts Stanislaus State (12-7, 6-7 CCAA) Saturday at 7 p.m. The Warriors were swept at No. 22 Cal State San Bernardino Friday night.
