LA JOLLA, Calif. - A solid all-around effort led the UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory against Cal State East Bay Friday at RIMAC Arena. Scores in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match were 25-18, 25-14 and 25-12.
UCSD (9-8, 5-4 CCAA) hit .300 on the night with 43 kills and 13 errors in 100 attacks. It was the fifth time this season that the Tritons swung at .300 or better. They also sided-out 35 times in 46 opportunities, 76 percent. The service game was strong as well with nine aces and UCSD held a 53-39 lead in digs.
Meagan Wright (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) produced another strong outing for UC San Diego, finishing with 11 kills, 11 digs, four service aces and three blocks. Her 17 points were a match-high. The junior posted a .323 hitting percentage.
Kameron Cooper hit .538 (9-2-13) and Heidi Sierks had a double-double with 31 assists and 12 digs.
Cal State East Bay hit .047 for the match with 25 kills and 20 errors in 107 attacks. Kiki Leuteneker had a team-best seven kills and Angie Maina led all players with 13 digs.
The Pioneers fell to 3-14 overall and 1-8 in the CCAA.
The Tritons scored the first four points of the match, two of those coming off of Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) kills. They never trailed in the set and finished it off with back-to-back-to-back kills, two by Wright with one by Cooper sandwiched in-between.
Set two was close early. At 5-5, UCSD won two straight points on CSUEB errors - one on service and the other on attack after hitting into blocks by Rebecca Seaberry and Wright. The Tritons held a lead the rest of the way.
The third set was all UC San Diego as the Tritons once again scored the first four points. A later four-point run put UCSD up by a score of 19-6 and another ran it to 24-9. The Pioneers shook off three match points, but a Molly Dalziel kill was the final play of the night.
UCSD hosts SF State (7-9, 5-4) Saturday at 7 p.m. The Gators have won three of their last four, but fell in straight sets Friday at No. 23 Cal State San Bernardino.
Prior to Saturday's match, banners will be unveiled at RIMAC Arena in honor of the four 2015 inductees into the UCSD Athletics Hall of Fame.
