Win Streak Closes with 83-73 Loss to Humboldt State

LA JOLLA, Calif. - A six-game win streak came to an end Saturday for the UC San Diego men's basketball team as it was defeated, 83-73, by Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at RIMAC Arena.

UCSD dropped to 10-6 overall and 8-4 in the CCAA, while HSU improved to 12-6 and 6-6. The Tritons had won the previous four match-ups against the Lumberjacks.

Adam Klie and Hunter Walker each totaled a game-high 17 points for UC San Diego. Klie was 5-for-6 from the field, 7-for-7 from the free throw line and also recorded a game co-high nine rebounds. Drew Dyer also finished in double figures with 15 points.

Six of eight Humboldt State players finished with 10 or more points, including Austin Bryan and David Howard, who each registered 16. Rakim Brown had nine boards and Allan Guei handed our four assists.

HSU made almost 52 percent of its shots and hit nearly 56 percent in the second half. UCSD made 45 percent of its attempts.

The teams entered the night as the top two three-point shooting squads in the league. HSU was first, having made 147 on the year, while UCSD was second with 137. Both teams netted just five apiece in the game.

A jumper by Jeff Van Dyke (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) at the 7:30 mark of the opening half put UCSD up by 12 points, 27-15, its largest lead of the game. However, Humboldt State closed out the frame on a 21-6 run to lead 36-33 at the break.

The Tritons led briefly by a point early in the second half, but a 13-0 run by the Lumberjacks gave them a 53-41 advantage with 13:57 left in the game. UCSD would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.

The Tritons' six-game win streak tied its longest since the program moved to NCAA Division II status for the 2000-01 season.

UCSD, alone in fourth place in the league, hosts Cal State East Bay on Jan. 30 and Cal State Monterey Bay on Jan. 31 to begin the second half of the CCAA season. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m. starts at RIMAC Arena.
