LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's basketball team took down league-leading Sonoma State Friday, shooting 57 percent in the second half en route to a 63-57 victory in front of a season-high 1,671 fans at RIMAC Arena.
UCSD pushed both of its records over .500, improving to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). SSU, which had won seven of its last eight games, fell to 8-3 on the year and 5-2 in conference play.
Down by four points, 25-21, at halftime, the Tritons made 12 of their 21 shots from the field and were 17-for-20 from the free throw line in the second half, out-scoring the Seawolves by 10.
With 15:34 left in the game and Sonoma State leading 30-29, UC San Diego went on a 14-1 and led by a score of 43-21 at the 10:11 mark.
Just over a minute later, two free throws by Jeff Van Dyke gave the Tritons a 14-point lead (47-33), the largest by either team on the night.
With 20 seconds remaining, David Ahern nailed a three to get the Seawolves back within five (62-57), but that was as close as they would get.
