LA JOLLA, Calif. - The eighth-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team (4-6, 1-0) defeated visiting Fresno Pacific (4-4, 0-1), 19-2, on Friday in a Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) contest at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Triton defense came alive as they shut down the Sunbirds for the entire first half and only gave up two goals in the second half.
Sophomore driver Andy Moore got things started with back-to-back goals on consecutive UCSD possessions, the first one coming from an assist from senior goalkeeper Cameron Ravanbach. After scores from Matt Michalko, Josh Stiling, Luca De Vivo and Chase Cockerill, Moore completed the hat trick with 26 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Tritons a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, UCSD scored four goals coming from Lukas Syka, Cockerill, Stiling and Michalko to go into halftime with the lead, 11-0.
The second half opened up with Stiling finding the back of the cage. FPU was able to get its first score of the game with 5:54 left in the third quarter, coming from Connor Cookingham. Stiling answered back with a goal of his own on the next possession. Syka and Moore added one each and Stiling would later score his third of the frame to give the Tritons a 16-1 bulge going into the final period.
UCSD outscored FPU 3-1 with two scores coming from senior two-meter Dan Lorch and junior utility Jacob Castro to win the match 19-2.
The Tritons will have five days off before hosting WWPA rival Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Last year's contest drew over 1600 fans. There will be a pregame tailgate for students at Warren Field, adjacent to Canyonview Aquatic Center.
