LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego's Caitlin Brenton made her final career home match a good one, putting down 16 kills to lead the Tritons to a 3-1 victory against Humboldt State Saturday in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) volleyball action at RIMAC Arena.
Scores were 20-25, 25-18, 30-28 and 25-20.
The win snapped a season-long five-match losing streak for UCSD, which improved to 13-11 overall and 11-9 in the CCAA. With the loss, HSU is now 16-8 and 13-7.
The victory kept the Tritons undefeated against the Lumberjacks at 21-0. It was also the 100th career win for fourth-year head coach Ricci Luyties, who holds a 100-43 record during his time in La Jolla.
Brenton knocked down the match-high 16 kills while hitting .429 (16-1-35). The opposite hitter also added five digs and five blocks.
Setter Heidi Sierks added yet another double-double to her season total, picking up her 19th with 24 assists and 14 digs. Kameron Cooper had 10 kills and seven blocks, while Makensie Bates totaled a match co-high 20 digs.
As a team, the Tritons hit just .205 (57-24-161), but the Lumberjacks mustered only a .112 (55-34-188) attack. Both teams were strong at the net, with UCSD totaling 13 blocks and HSU 11.
Symone Hayden had 12 kills and Ashley Owen finished with 10 for the 'Jacks. Haley Biles amassed 20 digs.
Humboldt led the whole way in the first set, while UC San Diego owned the lead for the entire second stanza. Down 28-27 in the third, the Tritons scored three consecutive points on back-to-back kills by Cooper and Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) followed by a double block from Rachel Gam and Alyssa McNeely.
It was also the final home appearance for Gam and Alyssa Lin.
UCSD concludes its regular season next week on the road, playing at Cal State East Bay on Nov. 14 and Cal State Monterey Bay on Nov. 15.
