HISTORY LESSON
The UCSD men's cross country team has never won the CCAA championship. The Chico State men have won the event for the last 12 years, dating back to 2002. The last time the women took the conference trophy was in 2005. The Chico State women have worn the CCAA crown the last six years, starting in 2008.
ALWAFAI LEADING THE TRITONS
The men's team opened the season with a win at the California Baptist Invitational in Riverside with Daniel Hauptman, Tanner Collins, Tareq Alwafai, Scott Acton and Brendan Gee accounting for five of the top seven finishers. The team went to the UC Riverside Invitational the following week to finish fifth as a team and first among non-Division I teams led by Alwafai and Hauptman taking 17th and 22nd place, respectively.
The Tritons finished runner-up in non-Division I scoring at the Stanford Invitational, coming in behind fourth-ranked CCAA rival Chico State. Alwafai once again led UCSD with a 16th place finish with a time of 24:12 over eight kilometers.
UCSD won the 22nd Annual Triton Classic in dominant fashion. Alwafai and Collins were the first and second collegiate runners to cross the line, respectively. Acton finished seventh and Daniel Franz narrowly missed the top-10 with an 11th place finish. The Triton men are currently ranked 13th in the nation.
AS MANY RUNNERS FINISHING AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE
Pack running has been the key to the success on the women's side. The Tritons opened up their season with a runner-up performance at the California Baptist Invitational, finishing behind then-No. 11 CBU, led by Corinne Hinkle who won the race in her collegiate cross country debut.
UCSD used their pack in the front with three runners (Hinkle, Paige Hughes and Chandler Colquitt) in the top 25 to come in fifth overall and first among non-Division I teams at the UC Riverside Invitational the following week.
The Tritons had an even stronger grouping two weeks later at the Stanford Invitational as Hinkle, Michelle Le Roux, Hughes and Colquitt all finished within 11 seconds of each other. UCSD finished in fourth place in non-Division I scoring behind University of Victoria, No. 4 Chico State and No. 9 Simon Fraser.
The women took first place at the 22nd Annual Triton Classic. Hinkle and Hughes led the team once again as they finished fourth and fifth, respectively. The UCSD women are currently in the No. 9 position in the national coaches' poll.
HEAD COACH NATE GARCIA
Former Triton student-athlete Nate Garcia is in his eighth season as head coach of the UCSD cross country program. He took over the reins in 2007 after spending five seasons as an assistant coach.
