HAYWARD, Calif. - Caitlin Brenton had a match-high 18 kills, but the UC San Diego women's volleyball team was defeated, 3-1, Friday night at league opponent Cal State East Bay. Scores from Pioneer Gym were 19-25, 25-17, 25-19 and 29-27.
UCSD, which has lost six of its last seven matches, is now 13-12 overall and 11-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUEB improved to 10-16 and 7-14 with the victory.
Brenton also added six digs and three blocks to her box score totals. Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) finished with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Heidi Sierks also recorded a double-double with 39 assists and 17 digs. It was the setter's 20th double of the season. Makensie Bates had 22 digs.
CSUEB got 14 kills from both Samantha Bruno and Amber Hall. Angie Maina had a match-best 26 digs.
The Pioneers won the offensive battle handily, posting a .256 (59-17-164) to .190 (61-29-168) advantage in hitting percentage.
UC San Diego led for much of the fourth set and had a 22-18 lead. However, Cal State East Bay scored five of the next six points and had the set tied at 23-23. The Tritons had three set points, but couldn't close out the frame. Down 26-25, the Pioneers scored two straight points to go up 27-26. UCSD tied it on a kill by Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS), but back-to-back kills from Kiani Rayford and Hall gave the match to the Pioneers.
The Tritons out-hit their opponent in the final set, .231 to .226.
The teams split the season series as UCSD rolled to a straight-set win over East Bay at RIMAC Arena on Oct. 11.
UCSD will look to rebound and end its regular season on a high note as it plays at Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at 7 p.m. The Tritons swept the Otters at RIMAC Arena on Oct. 10 as Brenton and Dahle each had 11 kills.
CSUMB swept Cal Poly Pomona Friday.
