LOS ANGELES -- Senior goalie Cameron Ravanbach recorded 10 saves as No. 8 UC San Diego (8-8, 3-0 WWPA) upset No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (9-7), 9-4 on Sunday at the SoCal Tournament hosted by UCLA. The Tritons took sixth place in the tournament as they fell short of a second upset, dropping 11-10 to No. 5 Long Beach State (13-3).
"We played obviously one of our best games of the year against UCSB," head coach Denny Harper said. "A great defensive effort to only give up four goals to a team of that caliber. Long Beach is a legit fifth ranked team and we had them on the ropes, but couldn't finish them off. All and all however the weekend was good and we should move up in the national rankings."
Game One - No. 8 UCSD 9, No. 6 UCSB 4
After a scoreless first five minutes, junior Chase Cockerill scored the first goal of the game to put the Tritons up 1-0. UCSB tied it up with 2:36 left in the first quarter.
The Gauchos took the lead in the second quarter with a goal from Liam Gaughan and Bryan Snyder. But the Tritons answered back.
Matt Michalko netted his first goal of the game to cut UCSB's lead to 3-2. With less than a minute left in the second quarter, Lukas Syka found the back of the cage and Michalko scored his second to take a 4-3 lead at the half.
Senior Josh Stiling and Cockerill tacked on two more goals in the third quarter.
While Ravanbach had a stellar performance throughout the contest, he really shined in the fourth quarter by shutting out the sixth ranked team.
Joe Dietrich, Syka and Stiling each netted a goal in the final quarter to help secure UCSD's 9-4 win.
Game Two - No. 5 Long Beach State 11, No. 8 UCSD 10
After maintaining a slight edge over Long Beach State for a majority of the game, UCSD dropped in the fourth quarter as the 49ers took an 11-10 win against the Tritons.
The first quarter started off with Stiling finding the back of the cage. Thomas Higginson and David Higginson finished off the quarter by each scoring a goal to give UCSD a 3-2 lead.
The Tritons held a 5-4 lead at the half after Stiling and Cockerill each netted a goal in the second quarter.
Stiling opened up the third quarter by completing the hat trick on a man up power play.
Long Beach State scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to give them an 11-9 lead. UCSD scored once more before the game was over, but it wasn't enough.
Stiling finished the contest with five goals, and Ravanbach made nine stops.
The Tritons will return to Canyonview Aquatic Center on Oct. 17 where they will host conference opponent California Baptist at 6 p.m.
