Walker's Career-High Drives UCSD to 93-70 Win Over Cal State Monterey Bay

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Hunter Walker poured in a career-high 25 points to lead the UC San Diego men's basketball team to a commanding 93-70 league victory against Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.

The win improved UCSD's overall record to 7-5 and the team is now 3-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. CSUMB, which has now lost its last three games, fell to 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the league.

Walker was 9-for-14 from the floor, which included three three-pointers. He made four of five free throws and also finished with six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. The sophomore's previous career high in points was 16, which he collected earlier this season against Daemen College.

James McCann, who scored 23 points in a win against Cal State East Bay Friday, netted another 22 tonight. He also had a game-high eight assists. MacKenzie McCullough recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-best 10 rebounds, while Drew Dyer totaled 14 points.

The Otters received a career-high 19 points out of Kris Gallop, who also pulled down a team-high eight boards. Evan Zeller finished with 10 points.

UCSD was potent from behind the arc, nailing 12 three-pointers, a season-high. Overall, the Tritons made 52 percent of their shots, while the Otters hit 43 percent.

For the second straight night, UCSD out-rebounded its opponent 42-32.

Cal State Monterey Bay struggled mightily from the free throw line, making just 21 of their 40 attempts, 53 percent.

Down 11-9 with 13:33 remaining in the first half, Dyer drilled a three to put UCSD up and the Tritons held a lead for the rest of the game. Their largest lead of the night was 27 points when a McCann free throw gave them an 88-61 advantage with 2:53 left in the game.

UCSD led 44-32 at halftime.

It was the third time this season that the Tritons put 90 or more points on the board.

After playing their last six games at home, the Tritons will hit the road next week. They play at Sonoma State on Friday, Jan. 17, and at San Francisco State on Saturday, Jan. 18. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m. starts.
