UCSD Uses Strong Second Half to Down Stags

CLAREMONT, Calif. – UC San Diego outscored Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 8-5 in the second half to escape with a 17-12 win Friday. Tician Toplak led the Tritons (3-2) with four goals in the win.

To complement the four goals from Toplak, Jeffrey Jarvis found the back of the cage three times, Joe Dietrich, David Higginson (San Diego/The Bishop's School) and Tommy Friedrich (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) poured in two apiece and Luca De Vivo and Chase Cockerill tallied one on the afternoon.

“We had an excellent man-up performance today,” said head coach Denny Harper. “We battled and played through a ton of adversity to come out with the win.”

With the score knotted up at 3-3 after the first period, the Tritons produced six goals in the second period to head into halftime up 9-7.

The Stags (0-3) opened up the third period with a goal to pull within one of the Tritons 9-8, but UCSD exemplified its toughness by scoring three straight goals to end the period.

With a slight cushion up 12-8, the Tritons answered each of CMS's attempts at jumping back in the game in the final period. UCSD outscored the Stags 5-4 in the fourth to grab the 17-12 win at Axelrood Pool.

“It's always a tough place for us to get a win,” said Harper. “CMS has a really good team and we could definitely see them at the NCAA's at the end of the year.”

UCSD moved the ball well on offense throughout the match, finding assists on 14 of the 17 goals. Higginson led the Tritons with four helps while De Vivo added three. The UCSD offense also drew 10 ejections to create the six-on-five opportunities to take advantage of. Overall, the Tritons fired 30 shots on goal to finish with a 56% shooting percentage.

Cameron Ravanbach (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) recorded 11 saves in the cage for UCSD while the Triton defense amassed 11 steals, led by four from De Vivo.

Tanner Cullen led CMS with four goals in the loss.

UCSD will be back in action in Claremont tomorrow. The Tritons take on Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m. before facing No. 1 USC at 1:30 p.m.
