No. 12 Tritons Sweep Cal State Stanislaus

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team eased past Cal State Stanislaus, 3-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. Set scores were 25-10, 25-16 and 25-23.

With a fourth successive victory, UCSD improved to 20-3 overall and 12-3 in the CCAA. This is a third straight 20-win campaign now for the Tritons under fourth-year head coach Ricci Luyties. UCSD remained in a second-place tie in the CCAA standings with No. 14 Sonoma State, which took care of visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night.

Cal State Stanislaus fell to 7-16 overall and 4-11 in league play.

The result marked a first home sweep for the Tritons in conference action in 2013, and first at any venue since defeating the Warriors 3-0 in Turlock in the first meeting of the season between the sides over a month ago on Sept. 27. UCSD had conceded at least one set in going 9-1 since then heading into Saturday's activity.

Junior opposite Caitlin Brenton led UCSD offensively with 14 kills, hitting .480 (14-2-25). After her attack gave the Tritons a 17-10 cushion in the first set, Brenton served the next eight points to close it out, adding two more kills in the process.

UCSD led from beginning to end in the first and third sets.

Senior libero Brittany Lombardi produced a team-high 14 digs, while sophomore setter Heidi Sierks completed the match with 29 assists, five digs, two kills and two service aces. Junior middle Sara McCutchan had seven kills and three total blocks.

Luyties was able to use his bench with a little more freedom than normal. Senior outside hitter Lizzy Andrews contributed six kills. Sophomore Katy Woodward had seven digs and served back-to-back aces to give the Tritons an 11-6 advantage in the third set.

True freshmen Alyssa Lin and Makensie Bates both entered in that third stanza, with Lin providing a season-high three assists and Bates setting Brenton on match point. Sophomores Rachel Gam and Kamila Tan (San Diego/Cathedral Catholic HS) added two kills apiece.

For the Warriors, freshman outside hitter Blair Ehrlich posted a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore teammate Nicole Kincaide joined her in double-figure kills with 10.

The Tritons outhit Stanislaus, .305-.126.

UCSD wraps up a season-long seven-match home stand next weekend against Humboldt State on Friday, Nov. 8, and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, Nov. 9. First serve for both contests inside RIMAC Arena is set for 7 p.m.
