UCSD Wins Fourth Straight, 3-1 at Humboldt State

ARCATA, Calif. - The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team won its fourth straight match Saturday, defeating league opponent Humboldt State, 3-1, at Lumberjack Arena in Northern California.

Scores were 25-15, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-18 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match. UCSD is now 13-2 overall and 5-2 in the league, while HSU is 7-6 and 2-4.

"This was another tough battle for us on the road," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "During this road swing, we have faced a lot of difficult situations that we've overcome and that's a great sign for this team moving forward."

The Tritons played big at the net, out-blocking the Lumberjacks, 12.5 to 4.0. The total matched a season-high for UCSD. Middle Kameron Cooper led all players with a career-best nine blocks and opposite Caitlin Brenton followed with seven. Brenton also had eight kills and three service aces.

Sophie Rowe was the team leader with 17.5 points on 15 kills, an ace and three block assists. She added 11 digs. Danielle Dahle also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs.

Sara McCutchan hit a blistering .591 from the middle, collecting 15 kills with just two errors in 22 attacks. For the third consecutive match, libero Brittany Lombardi finished with 25 digs. Setter Heidi Sierks had 49 assists and 13 digs.

For Humboldt State, Ashley Owen had a match-high 17 kills, while Kaitlyn Dunaway totaled 14 kills and 17 digs. Setter Sam Siebert had 44 assists and 14 digs and Kelci Renshaw led her team defensively with 23 digs.

Offensively, neither team was outstanding. UCSD finished with a .201 (55-21-169) hitting percentage, while HSU swung at .151 (54-27-179). The Tritons held a sizable .979 to .892 advantage in serve percentage with six aces and two errors. The Jacks had three aces and made nine errors from the line.

After playing its last seven matches on the road, UCSD finally returns home to La Jolla. The Tritons host CCAA opponents Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 11 and 12, respectively, at RIMAC Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. both nights.
