LA JOLLA, Calif. - A 9-4 advantage in hits and strong pitching led the 30th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team to a 6-0 exhibition win over Point Loma Nazarene Monday night at Triton Ballpark.
UCSD scored a lone run in the second inning and tacked on two more in the fifth and another three in the sixth.
The Tritons got two hits each from second baseman Spencer Frazier, first baseman Jonah Northrop and center fielder Danny Susdorf. Frazier knocked in a pair and doubled, Northrop scored twice and Susdorf tripled, doubled and stole a base.
Triton starter Devin Garrett, who redshirted in 2011, gave up two hits, two walks and struck out one in three innings of work. Reliever Justin Burns gave up just one hit over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Freshman Dan Kolodin threw two innings and closer Elias Tuma tossed the ninth. Burns, Kolodin and Tuma all had two strikeouts.
Four different Sea Lions collected one hit each to account for their total. PLNU threw one pitcher per inning with Garrett Levson, the first reliever for starter Jack Archie, gave up the eventual game-winning run in the second inning and was saddled with the loss.
With two outs in the second inning, Northrop singled to right-center and freshman third baseman Ryan O'Malley was hit by a pitch. Left fielder Gregg Ringold drew a walk to load the bases for Frazier, who singled to right to plate Northrop, which would prove to be the only run UCSD needed for the victory.
It was UCSD's second and final exhibition game prior to starting the regular season this week. The Tritons host non-conference opponent Western Oregon, ranked 33rd nationally, for a four-game series starting with a single game on Friday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. Saturday's twin bill starts at noon and Sunday's finale is slated for a 11 a.m. first pitch.
