LA JOLLA, Calif. - In its first of two exhibition games prior to opening the regular season, the 30th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team was edged, 6-5, by Cal State San Marcos Friday night at Triton Ballpark.
Down 6-1 after five innings, UCSD scored two in the sixth and another two in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't push across any more runs.
Danny Susdorf, Justin Rahn, Garrett Tuck and Spencer Frazier all had two hits each as UCSD out-hit the Cougars 12-9. First-year Triton James Mossholder had two RBI.
Starter Jeff Rauh took the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits in three innings of work. Rauh and reliever Greg Selarz each struck out four San Marcos batters. Selarz, the third and final Triton pitcher of the game, threw three scoreless innings and gave up just one hit.
UCSD hosts Point Loma Nazarene in a final exhibition on Monday, Jan. 30 at Triton Ballpark with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. Admission is free.
The regular season begins next week at Triton Ballpark as well. UCSD hosts Western Oregon in a four-game non-conference series Feb. 3-5. UCSD students are admitted free to all regular season home games with a valid ID. For ticket info click here and for directions to Triton Ballpark click here.
