UCSD Takes Part in North American Cup in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. - The UC San Diego fencing teams were back in action over the holiday weekend, competing in the North American Cup in Portland. The tournament featured most of the top fencers on the continent and several elite individuals from around the world.

The Triton fencers came away with some good results during the competition and gained valuable experience along the way.

Freshman Jeffrey Chan had the highest finish for UCSD, placing 28th out of a total of 149 entries in junior men's foil. Sophomore Bryson Abilay also fared well, placing 31st out of 114 fencers in junior men's sabre. He scored a huge upset after pools when took down the top-ranked fencer, 15-14.

On the women's side, sophomore Munira Gesner took 29th place out of 86 entries in junior women's sabre.

Chan, Abilay and Gesner all earned U-19 National Team points by virtue of their top-32 finish.

Other notable performances came from senior Michael Fong and junior Alex Lavin, who finished 45th and 52nd in Division I men's foil, respectively.

Up next for the Tritons is their annual dual meet against conference rivals UC Irvine and Arizona State on Saturday, January 28. The competition will get underway at 2:45 p.m. at RIMAC Arena on campus.
