LOS ANGELES - Competing for the final time before the NCAA National Championships in two weeks, UC San Diego had several student-athletes looking to improve their marks at the Cal State L.A. Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday in Los Angeles. While UCSD only had a small group of athletes on hand, there were still several noteworthy performances on the day.
Senior sprinter Kelly Fogarty recorded one of the Tritons' two individual victories, winning the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 23.92. The Danville, Calif. native, who set the school record in the event earlier this season, posted the top time in field with several elite and unattached athletes.
Fogarty will compete in both 100 and 200 at the NCAA Championships later this month.
Junior Tobi Haswell had UCSD's other individual victory on the day, claiming the top spot in the men's 400-meter hurdles at 53.96.
The women's 4x100 relay team also took first place, but the victory came by default as La Verne -- the only other school competing in the event -- dropped the baton and did not finish. The Tritons' group of Bailey Weaver, Kathleen Hitchens, Jacqueline Rose and Fogarty clocked in at 47.45.
Senior George Davis III had a huge performance in his final meet as a Triton, recording a lifetime best in the men's shot put. The West Hills, Calif. native uncorked a throw of 48'9.5", which is a mark that ranks ninth all-time at UCSD. He finished sixth overall in the event.
Other notable performances included Erin Langford's second place showing in the triple jump at 38'3.25" and Deyna Roberson and Caitlin Meagher finishing 3-4 in the 400 hurdles with respective times of 62.21 and 62.96.
The Division II National Championships are scheduled for May 26-28 at Al Brenda Track on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. UCSD is now awaiting the final NCAA acceptance list, which is due out this Wednesday.
