UCSD Wins IFCSC Championships In Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC San Diego fencing team took home both the men's and women's overall titles in the final Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California tournament of the year on Saturday at UC Irvine. UCSD defeated USC, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and Claremont.

The Tritons went on to win four of the six perpetual conference trophies in Women's Epee, Women's Sabre, Men's Foil, and Men's Sabre while finishing second in Women's Foil and Men's Epee. Men's Foil failed to lose a single bout, while Women's Sabre did almost as well by dropping one bout for the entire day.

A number of Tritons went undefeated on the day. Men's Foil's Brennan Louie, Alex Lavin and Nikolai Gutierrez all finished 12-0 on the day while Nick McGuinness of Men's Epee went 11-0. Jonathan Ott and Nick Bartuzik of Men's Sabre were 10-0; Munira Gesner and Jordan Conway of Women's Sabre were 7-0 and Rose Forcier of Women's Foil was also 7-0.

UCSD fencers took home the majority of the conference awards handed out after the competition. Men's Sabre swept the top three spots as senior and squad captain Ott finished first with a flawless undefeated season of 36-0. Bartuzik was second with a 35-1 record, followed by fellow freshman Bryson Abilay (30-6).

In Men's Foil, freshman Brennan Louie took first with a 34-2 record, followed closely by Alex Lavin in second place (33-3). Gutierrez ended in sixth place with a 17-1 record. In Men's Epee, sophomore James Galamba took first with a 33-3 record.  McGuinness was second (29-7) and squad captain Patrick Burton was fifth (25-9).

In Women's Epee, squad captain Amy Bianchini was conference champion with a 35-1 record. Women's team captain Casey Gillcrist was third, going 31-5. Diane Yi was 23-11 in her first season as a starter to finish in seventh place.

Women's Sabre won awards for second through fourth place. Gesner was 33-3 as she took second, followed closely by squad captain Lexy Stanley in third place at 32-4. Right behind her was Jordan Conway in fourth with a 31-5 record. In Women's Foil, Forcier took third (31-5), Julia Wu took fourth (28-8) and freshman Amrit Khalsa was fifth (27-9).

UCSD will fence in the West Regional Championship against Stanford and Air Force on March 5 at Air Force Academy.
