IRVINE, Calif. - The UC San Diego fencing teams took part in the Collegiate Open at UC Irvine on Sunday and the Tritons turned in a dominant performance against some of their Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California (IFCSC) rivals.
UCSD won a total of five gold medals on the day, including all three weapons on the men's side. In men's foil, senior
Michael Fong finished first overall in a field of 26 competitors. Teammate
Joseph Schenkel was second.
The Tritons placed 1-2-3 in men's sabre with sophomore
Bryson Abilay outlasting teammate
Peter Meckling in the gold medal bout. Sophomore
Nick Bartuzik finished third as UCSD was dominant in field of 19 fencers.
UCSD had the top two performers in men's epee as well, with rookie
Adam Campbell-Kruger winning the event and sophomore
Luc Ginestet finishing second.
The Tritons also had a strong day on the women's side, as sophomores
Amrit Khalsa and
Munira Gesner claimed the foil and sabre titles, respectively.
Victoria Parra and
Rose Forcier finished second and third in foil, while
Lexy Stanley and
Elizabeth Shimei finished right behind Gesner in sabre.
Women's epee was the only event the Tritons were unable to master, with Karla Silva of the Los Angeles International Fencing Center claiming the gold. UCSD's
Diane Yi finished fifth overall.
The Tritons will be back in action on Saturday, November 19 when they travel to Santa Barbara for the Mega Meet.
