LA JOLLA, Calif. -The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team defeated Pacific for the sixth consecutive time in a 30-20, 30-28, 30-17 sweep on Saturday night in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons outhit Pacific .398 - .209 and outblocked the Tigers 10.0 - 7.5.
Frank Fritsch led the way with 15 kills on .500 hitting while
Carl Eberts added eight kills. Pacific was led by Taylor Hughes with 14 kills. With the win, UCSD improves to 8-15, 4-12 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while Pacific drops to 8-16, 0-16 MPSF.
For the Tritons, Phil Bannan had 39 assists and five digs. Jason Spangler finished with seven kills while Adrian Guthals and Cyrus Kiani had six kills apiece. Alex Simon served up two aces, the final two points in the third set to give UCSD the sweep.
In the first set, the Tritons would hit at a .448 clip. Leading 10-8, the Tritons went on an 11-3 run, capped by a Fritsch service ace and UCSD had a comfortable 21-11 lead. The Tritons would win the set 30-20 on an Eberts kill.
The second set was the closest of the night, as Pacific led by as many as three points at 17-14 and 23-20. After a UCSD timeout, the Tritons scored three straight points on a Spangler kill and two Pacific attack errors. Tied at 23-23, Pacific's Hughes sent down a kill to give the Tigers the lead. Kiani followed with a kill, to tie the set and UCSD took its first lead at 25-24 on a setting error. UCSD would never surrender the lead, as Fritsch sent down the final kill at 30-28.
In the third set with the score tied 10-10, the Tritons went on a 7-2 run to take a commanding 17-12 lead. Pacific would not get closer than 18-14 as UCSD scored six straight points to open up a 10 point lead at 24-14. Simon finished off the set with back-to-back service aces.
UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to take on Hawaii on April 2-3.
