LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's water polo team held a three-goal lead in the third quarter, but ultimately dropped a 10-7 decision to No. 13 Hartwick in the opening game of the 2010 UCSD Triton Invitational on Saturday morning.
Allyssa Analytis, Siann Ells-Tewhiu, and Jessica McKee scored three goals apiece to lead the Hawks, while
Audra Bloom and
Felicia Orozco had a pair of goals each for the Tritons.
Saturday's game served as Hartwick's season opener, while UCSD falls to 0-5 overall after losing all four of its contests at the Michigan Invitational January 23-24.
"We got better again today, but we are not the kind of team that can let opportunities slip away," first year head coach
Brad Kreutzkamp said. "We missed a penalty shot and a one-on-zero and that was really the game for us."
Playing at Canyonview for the first time this season, the Tritons looked good early on, taking a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.
Kirsten Bates scored the game's only goal in the second and Orozco scored early in the third to give UCSD a 5-2 advantage.
Hartwick came on strong at that point, scoring six consecutive goals to take an 8-5 lead two minutes into the fourth. Bloom's second goal of the game made it 8-6, but Analytis and McKee answered for the Hawks for the final 10-7 margin.
Also registering goals for the Tritons was
Hanalei Crowell and
Jessica Tran.
The Tritons are back in the pool at 1:50 against Marist as the 17-team tournament continues. Marsist lost an 11-7 decision to Cal State Northridge in the second game of the day.
