LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 3rd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team got leadoff back-to-back homeruns to set the tone in a 12-6 series opening win against No. 18 Western Oregon on Friday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. Vance Albitz and Robert Sedin homered as part of a six-run first inning as UCSD finished the day with 15 hits. Albitz fell a triple short of the cycle, reaching base in his first five at-bats. Tim Shibuya (2-0) earned the win going seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. UCSD improves to 2-1 while Western Oregon falls to 0-1.
"We did a great job setting the tone early against a very good arm," said head coach Dan O'Brien. "When we learn to complete nine full innings, we will be a tough team to beat."
Albitz finished the day going 4-for-5, including a homerun and double in the first inning. After the back-to-back homeruns to lead off the game, UCSD would go on to send 12 batters to the plate and score six times on seven hits to lead 6-0.
