LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's soccer team
saw its 2-0 lead disappear in the second half Sunday but rallied in overtime,
with Ellen Wilson knocking in the game-winner to capture the 3-2 home victory
over Cal Poly Pomona.
"It was definitely a tale of two halves," UCSD head coach Brian McManus said. "We
looked good early on and then we were a different team in the second half. You've
got to give Pomona a lot of credit. They won every 50-50 ball, they were the
more aggressive team in the second half and we were just making bad choices.
But I'm proud of the kids for hanging in there and pulling out the win when
they weren't at their best."
The win against the Broncos completes a 2-0 weekend for the Tritons against
South Division foes. With a 6-2-2 overall record and a 4-2-2 mark within the
California Collegiate Athletic Association, UCSD will travel to play two more
rivals next weekend in Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.
The Tritons took a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into Sunday's match, after a
short cross from Annette Ilg bounced off the CPP goalkeeper's hands and Sarah
McTigue flicked in the rebound chance. It marked McTigue's fourth goal of 2010
and 15th of her career.
Ilg stretched UCSD's advantage to 2-0 in the 26th minute when she sent a long
header over the leaping Broncos' netminder after receiving a bending free kick
from Hayley Johnson.
Despite going without a corner kick and being outshout 7-3, the Tritons took
their 2-0 lead into halftime.
The CPP offense found some rhythm in the second period, as Valerie Strawn put
the Broncos on the board when she dribbled up the left side and hooked a long
shot inside the far post at the 62:53 mark.
Roughly 12 minutes later, the Broncos tallied the equalizing score. Miya Quinn
sent a cross from the left that ended up caroming toward the net. Jennifer
Rivera controlled it and sent a quick shot past UCSD goalkeeper Kristin
Armstrong.
The Tritons earned four second-half corner kicks but couldn't recapture the
lead before regulation came to a close.
UCSD came out strong in overtime though, outshooting the Broncos 4-1 in the
bonus. The fourth and final shot went in, ending the match at 3-2 in favor of
the Tritons. Johnson sent a corner kick to the far post and after CPP keeper
Sarah Rohman got a hand on an initial shot from Lisa Bradley, Wilson nailed
home the rebound chance. It marked Wilson's first goal of 2010 and third of her
career.
The Tritons will challenge Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 7 p.m.
After losing 3-2 to Cal State Stanislaus Sunday, the Toros are 7-2-1 overall
and 5-2-1 in CCAA play.
