UCSD Fencers Take Part In Largest NCAA Meet Of Season At Northwestern Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. – The UC San Diego fencing team traveled to northwestern University over the weekend for the Northwestern Duals, the largest NCAA team meet held during the season.  Head coach Heidi Runyan's squad battled through 27 bout matches against many of the top teams in the country during the two day event, with the women finishing the event with a 9-5 record and men posting a 4-7 mark against their opponents.

The Triton women captured the biggest upset of the day, besting 8th-ranked Temple by a 14-13 margin.  Women's epee led UCSD to victory with a 7-2 mark against the Owls.  The women's squad also recorded 15-12 win against the University of North Carolina, with women's foil going 7-2.

The women's foil squad was impressive when matched against the host squad, securing a 5-4 victory against No. 3 Northwestern. Women's sabre posted an 8-1 record in the final match of the weekend, leading the Tritons to a 17-10 win over regional rival Stanford.

UCSD men had a tougher time during the competition, with both the foil and sabre team's unable to have a big performance at the team meet.  The men's epee team, reorganized and including many young Tritons, did beat expectations with wins against several of their opponents during the competition.

The UC San Diego fencing team will next be in action at home on February 6, hosting Cal Tech and UC Irvine.
