LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 13th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team lost a 7-4 decision to No. 5 Loyola Marymount on Thursday night at Coggan Family Aquatic Center. The Tritons were outscored 4-1 in the first half, while UCSD won the final period by a 2-1 score.
Brian Donohoe scored twice for UCSD, while
Steven Donohoe and
Bryce Madsen also scored. LMU was led by Max Schlagal with three goals. The loss drops the Tritons to 5-7 while the Lions improve to 8-2.
LMU has now won seven straight over the Tritons, with UCSD's last win coming in the 2006 Western Water Polo Association championship game.
The Tritons were held scoreless in the first period before Steven Donohoe's goal tied the game at 1-1 in the second quarter. LMU would strike at the 6:22, 3:46 and 0:32 marks to take a 4-1 lead at halftime.
Brian Donohoe scored with 6:24 in the third to pull UCSD within 4-2, but LMU scored two unanswered goals to close the quarter with a 6-2 advantage.
In the fourth, the Lions got on the board first to extend the lead to 7-2. Madsen and Brian Donohoe added goals for the Tritons to close out the scoring at 7-4. The teams would remain scoreless for the final 2:34.
Last week at the Northern California Tournament in Stanford, the Tritons outscored the Lions 3-1 in the fourth but came up one goal short in the 6-5 loss.
Brian Donohoe now has nine goals this season, while Steven Donohoe increased his team-high total to 28. Madsen's goal was his 12th of the year, tying him for the third highest total on the team.
UCSD is back in action on October 2 when it hosts UC Davis at 6:00 p.m.
