STANFORD, Calif. - The 17th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team defeated No. 18 UC Davis in the 11th-place game at the Northern California tournament on the Stanford campus. The 16-team tournament featured the top-12 teams in the nation and the Tritons managed to go 2-2 over the weekend. In the win against the Aggies, UCSD scored five times in the first quarter which proved to be the difference in the 10-7 win.
Brian Donohoe led the Tritons with three goals while
Kneif Lohse added two scores. UCSD is now 5-6 on the season. Earlier in the day, UCSD lost to No. 9 Long Beach State by an 11-7 decision.
Against Long Beach State, the 49ers took a 4-2 lead at halftime and went on to outscore the Tritons 3-1 in the third. UCSD managed to score four goals in the fourth, but it was not enough in the 11-7 loss. Peter Gresham and Bryce Madsen scored two goals each. Ian Bausback, Lance Curtiss and Sean Roberts also scored. David Morton made eight saves in goal.
In the 11th-place game, the Tritons scored early and often, taking a 5-2 lead in the first quarter. The Tritons shut out the Aggies in the second quarter and netted one score of their own to lead 6-2 at halftime. UC Davis inched closer in the third, coming within 8-5 through three. In the final period, each team would score two goals for the 10-7 final.
Brian Donohoe finished with three goals while Lohse added two scores. Ian Bausback, Steven Donohoe, Gresham, Matt Kerchner and Roberts also scored.
The Tritons also split their games on Saturday, losing to No. 5 Loyola Marymount by one goal, and defeating No. 10 Concordia.
UCSD is back in action on Thursday when it hosts No. 5 Loyola Marymount at the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex. First sprint is set for 6:00 p.m.
