POMONA, Calif. - The 4th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team made quick work of Cal Poly Pomona, sweeping the Broncos 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 on Saturday night in Pomona. The Tritons outhit the Broncos .297 - .035 as Sylvia Schmidt registered a match-high 11 kills on .455 hitting. Hillary Williamson and Lauren Bradley added eight kills apiece, both hitting well over .300. The Tritons improve to 10-1, 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Broncos drop to 4-5, 1-1 CCAA. CPP advanced to the NCAA West Regional Finals in 2008 before losing to Cal State San Bernardino.
The Tritons improve to 21-12 all-time against Cal Poly Pomona. UCSD and CPP had gone five sets in each of the last three meetings between the two squads. CPP was nationally ranked at No. 21 in the AVCA Preseason Poll.
Williamson hit at a .312 clip while Bradley hit at a .350 clip. Julia Freidenberg added seven kills on .455 hitting, raising her team leading hitting percentage to a .341 clip. The Tritons served up 10 aces, as Roxanne Brunsting had four aces and Janessa Werhane added three aces. Brunsting also had a match-high 14 digs.
Elaine Chen had a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs. Audrey Green recorded five kills off the bench.
The first set was much closer than the score indicated. Cal Poly Pomona got off to a quick start and led 10-6 and 12-9. The Tritons would tie it up at 14-14 after Schmidt sent down a kill. The teams were tied at 17-17 before a Roxanne Brunsting service run helped UCSD score the final eight points of the set. Green and Williamson combined for five kills in the run as UCSD won 25-17.
In the second set, the Tritons jumped out to an 11-4 lead after Brunsting served up an ace. CPP came back within 14-11, but UCSD quickly scored two more points including a Freidenberg kill to lead 17-12. The Broncos made one last push to come within 21-18 and 23-20, but Schmidt sent down consecutive kills to close out the set at 25-20 UCSD.
Long service runs in the third set by Werhane and Brunsting helped the Tritons to a 13-5 lead in the third set. UCSD never led the Broncos within six points the rest of the way as Green recorded the final two kills at 25-16.
UCSD is back in action on Friday, September 18 when it travels to Cal State L.A. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. on the Golden Eagles' campus.
