ANNAPOLIS, MD. - The 13th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team lost in sudden death overtime to No. 17 Navy by an 11-10 score on Saturday morning at the Scott Natatorium in Macdonough Hall. The Tritons were down by two scores at halftime and would score five times in the third quarter to tie the game. The Mids scored in the last overtime period for the one goal victory.
Steven Donohoe led the Tritons with four goals, while
Sean Roberts scored three times. The loss drops the Tritons to 3-4 this season. UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to the Northern California tournament, hosted by Stanford.
Navy led 3-2 after the first quarter and shut out the Tritons in the second quarter to take a 4-2 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Tritons outscored Navy 5-3 to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
The teams would score two goals each in the fourth period to make the score 9-9 at the end of regulation. In overtime, Navy and UCSD both scored in the first overtime. In the second overtime period, Navy scored the winning goal at 11-10.
UCSD now leads the all-time series against Navy 11-8.
Also scoring for the Tritons was Bryce Madsen twice, and Kneif Lohse. David Morton had 15 saves in the game.
