SANTA CLARA, Calif. ?The UC San Diego women's water polo team lost to Sonoma State by a 9-5 score in the first round of the Western Water Polo Association Championships on Friday afternoon in Santa Clara. The second quarter proved to be the difference as the Seawolves outscored UCSD 4-1 in the frame, taking a 6-3 lead at halftime. Sydney Gstettenbauer scored two goals to pace the Tritons. Markayla Quane made 10 saves in goal for UCSD. The Tritons will face the loser between Loyola Marymount and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at 11:40 a.m. UCSD drops to 10-20 on the season.
In the first quarter, Stephanie Heinrich and Sydney Gstettenbauer scored goals for the Tritons as the score was tied at 2-2 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Audra Bloom gave the Tritons the lead at 3-2 with 7:05 remaining. SSU would score the next four goals to take a 6-3 lead at halftime.
After SSU scored the opening goal of the third, UCSD's Jessica Tran stopped the SSU scoring run to pull the Tritons within 7-4 at the end of three periods.
UCSD would get no closer the rest of the way as the Seawolves scored the first two goals of the fourth before Gstettenbauer scored her second goal of the game to close out the scoring at 9-5 SSU.
