UCSD Erases Five-Run Deficit In Seventh Inning To Take Series Finale On Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? Allison May's walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning capped off a thrilling comeback for UC San Diego as the Tritons defeated visiting Cal State Stanislaus 10-9 on Saturday afternoon to earn a split in the weekend series. UCSD, which lost the first game of the day 4-3 in eight innings, scored five times in the last of the seventh in game two to send it to extra innings and set the stage for May's heroics in the eighth.

The Tritons rallied to win the nightcap for the second day in a row and now stand at 14-11 overall and 8-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the split. Cal State Stanislaus heads back to Turlock at 15-7 overall and 10-6 in the CCAA.

UCSD trailed 9-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh of game two, when Kris Lesovsky walked to lead off the inning and Sarah Woofter and Jenni Habib followed with singles to load the bases and ignite the rally. Nicole Saari then ripped a ball that bounced off the center fielder's glove, plating Lesovsky for the first run of the inning.

May followed with a two-run single to the gap in right center field, cutting the deficit to 9-7 with two on and nobody out. Lindsay Gaylord added an RBI single up the middle and May scored the tying run on Jennifer DeFazio's squeeze bunt the next at bat.

After Lauren Chastain came on and retired the side in the eighth, Saari singled to left field with one out in the bottom of the frame. The next batter was May, who doubled off the fence in right center and Saari came all the way around to score to winning run.

UCSD jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in first inning, but Alyssa Guzman's three-run homer capped off a four-run second inning for the Warriors. Jennifer Arnold's double down the left field line in the third put Stanislaus in front, 6-2.

Habib drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third and then hit a solo homerun in the fifth to cut it to 6-4, but the Warriors scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to take the 9-4 advantage heading into the last of the seventh.

Chastain (8-4) picked up the victory for the Tritons after pitching one inning of scoreless relief. The senior right hander got the decision in both games on the day, losing the early game after allowing four runs on eight hits in eight innings of work.

Stanislaus led 3-0 in game one, before UCSD fought its way back to force extra innings. Habib scored the Tritons' first run of the day in the fourth inning, Lesovsky drove in a run on a single up the middle in the fifth and then led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer to tie the game at 3-3.

The Warriors scored what proved the be the winning run on a close play at the plate in the top of the eighth when Jessica Gaumnitz came around to score on Ashlee Genseal's single up the middle. May made an excellent throw home and Saari got a tag on the runner, but she was ruled safe, giving Stanislaus the 4-3 advantage and, ultimately, the win.

Gaumnitz earned her second victory of the weekend, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking five in 7.1 innings of work. Stacey Hains came on to retire the final two batters in the eighth to pick up the save.

UCSD will return to the field on Sunday, March 22 after final exams in a nonconference doubleheader with the University of San Diego. First pitch is slated for noon at Triton Softball Field.
