Tritons Rally To Earn Split In First Two With Cal State Stanislaus

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? After dropping the first game of a CCAA doubleheader with Cal State Stanislaus 4-0, the UC San Diego softball team scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to take game two, 6-5. Kris Lesovsky went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs in the victory, while Nicole Saari also had three hits and a RBI.

UCSD's record now stands at 13-10 overall and 7-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the split. Cal State Stanislaus, which arrived in La Jolla on the heels of a four-game sweep over Chico State last weekend, now owns an overall mark of 14-6 and 9-5 in the CCAA.

Following the team's second shutout loss of the season in the early game, the Triton bats came alive in game two as UCSD took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lesovsky doubled to center field to lead off the inning and then scored on an error by the Warriors' first baseman for the Tritons' first run of the day. With a runner on second, Saari singled to right center field for the second run.

Stanislaus responded with three runs in the top of the second as doubles from Jennifer Arnold and Britney Borba around a two-run single from Erica McIntyre gave the Warriors a 3-2 advantage.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Lesovsky hit a two-run double over the center fielder's head to tie the score at 4-4.

The Warriors responded with a run in the sixth as a costly error in the outfield put the Tritons in a 5-4 hole.

Jennifer DeFazio and Katrine Gabriel led off the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back infield singles and Lesovsky followed with another big hit, driving in the tying run. The transfer from Florida Tech then stole second, prompting an errant throw from the Warrior catcher, and Gabriel stole home for what proved to be the winning run.

Freshman Tess Granath, who came on in relief of starter Christine Zankich in the fifth inning, retired the side in the top of the seventh to secure the win. She improved to 3-1 on the year, allowing one run on three hits in 2.2 innings of work.

Stacey Hains took the loss for the Warriors, allowing two runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of relief. Arnold started the game in the circle for Stanislaus and surrendered four runs in three and two thirds innings.

Reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week Jessica Gaumnitz fared much better for CSUS in game one, limiting the Tritons to just one hit on the way to her second complete-game shutout of the season. The senior right-hander struck out five and walked four to improve to 8-3 on the year.

Kimiko Wright hit a two-RBI double in the top of the second inning and then drove in another run in the fourth as Stanislaus took a 3-0 lead and chased Triton starter Lauren Chastain

The Warriors added another run in the top of the sixth for the final 4-0 margin.

UCSD's lone hit of the game was a double by Saari in the last of the sixth.

The Tritons and Warriors will wrap-up their four-game series with another doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
