LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego softball team lost both games of a CCAA doubleheader with defending national champion Humboldt State on Saturday, dropping the first game 1-0, before falling 10-1 in the series finale. The Triton offense struggled to get it going all day, managing just one run against the Lumberjack pitching duo of Gracie Perez and Nichole Parada.
After UCSD took the first game of the series on Friday, Humboldt State came back to win the last three, improving to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Tritons fall to 10-8 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA, having lost four of their last five overall.
Perez was the story in the first game of the day, holding UCSD without a hit until
Jenni Habib reached on an infield single to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. The junior right-hander allowed just three base runners and retired 10 batters in a row at one point.
Caitln Klug's RBI single in the top of the fifth inning was all Perez needed to pick up the win. She is now 3-2 on the year.
Triton starter
Lauren Chastain did an excellent job of keeping her team in it, scattering six hits over seven innings of work, but didn't get any help from her offense and took the loss. Her record drops to 5-3.
It was more of the same for head coach Patti Gercken's squad in game two, as UCSD managed just three hits off Parada.
After back-to-back RBI singles from Lindsay Warren and Natalie Galletly gave the Lumberjacks a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Tritons responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame. With a runner on second and one out, junior catcher
Nicole Saari doubled over the right fielder's head, driving home
Amanda Eliades for UCSD's only run of the day.
A seven run top of the seventh highlighted by Marissa Slattery's three-run homerun to left field gave Humboldt the final 10-1 advantage.
Parada improved to 3-0 on the year, allowing just the one run on three hits in the victory.
Christine Zankich got the start for the Tritons, allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work to take the loss. Chastain came on in relief in fourth inning and allowed six runs on seven hits, while striking out three.
The Tritons will look to bounce back when they travel to Rohnert Park for a four-game series with Sonoma State beginning Friday at 1:00 p.m.
