LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team trailed for much of the day but rallied for an exciting 14-13 2OT win against No. 14 Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. UCSD did not take its first lead of the day until the fourth quarter and trailed by two goals with just 2:35 left in regulation. The Tritons went to their All-American senior
Steven Donohoe who delivered a goal at the 1:09 mark and poured in a penalty shot with :22 left to send the game into overtime.
Bryce Madsen scored with 2:06 in the first OT and the Tritons shut out the Broncos in the overtime periods to claim the win.
With the win, UCSD improves to 12-13 while the Broncos drop to 15-9. Both squads will be in action at the Western Water Polo Association Championships on November 20-22 in Orange.
Shortly before the game, UCSD honored its six senior student-athletes, playing their final collegiate games at Canyonview Pool. Ian Bausback, Sean Roberts, Steven Donohoe, Peter Gresham, Kneif Lohse and Daniel Ramirez were the honored Tritons.
The UCSD senior class accounted for eight of UCSD's 14 goals against the Broncos.
The Tritons started slowly, being shut out in the first quarter trailing 2-0. SCU would build a three goal lead at 6-3 in the second quarter before Lance Curtiss pulled UCSD within 6-4 at halftime.
UCSD would score six times in the third quarter to get back in the game. The Tritons limited SCU to four goals in the quarter. SCU did lead for most of the quarter until Roberts poured in a goal with 1:41 left to make the score 10-9. Gresham followed with UCSD's sixth goal of the quarter, tying the game at 10-10 with :57 left.
In the fourth quarter, UCSD's Gresham scored again to give UCSD an 11-10 edge. SCU went on to score three unanswered goals to take the 13-11 lead with 2:35 remaining. Steven Donohoe followed with a goal at the 1:09 mark and a five-meter shot to tie the game at 13-13 with :22 remaining.
In overtime, the Tritons tightened their defense and shut out the Broncos in both periods. Madsen came through with the game winner in the first OT at the 2:06 mark.
UCSD is back in action with a pair of exhibition games on Saturday, November 14. UCSD takes on Sunset and the San Francisco Olympic Club, in preparation for the WWPA Tournament. Both exhibitions will take place at Canyonview Pool.
