Tritons Complete Action At The NCAA West Invitational

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The UC San Diego fencing team traveled to Stanford last weekend to fence in the NCAA West Invitational. This was a team meet with regional rival Stanford as well as with Detroit Mercy and Northwestern women. This was the hardest challenge so far this year for the Tritons. The team started strong, but ended up coming away with mixed results.

The day started out well with the women's team taking on Stanford and earning an impressive 16-11 victory. The women's sabre and epee fencers held their own, while women's foil delivered the margin of victory by going 7-2. Next up was Detroit Mercy who UCSD cleanly defeated by a 25-2 score. Last for the Triton women was Northwestern. Northwestern's strong women's team easily won the match by a 23-4 score.

In the afternoon the men faced just two teams. First was Detroit Mercy which the Tritons defeated by a 24-3 margin. Then the men closed out the day against Stanford. Men's foil out-fenced their opponent by going 7-2, but they were unable to make up the difference from sabre and epee so that UCSD ended up with an 11-16 defeat.

The most victories for the day came from team captain Pilar Alicia in women's foil who finished with seven victories and two defeats. From men's foil came the two best records, as squad captain Benjamin Dorn and freshman Joseph Schenkel each notched 3-1 records.

On Nov. 21 UCSD will close its fall season by hosting a Saturday afternoon home tournament with UC Irvine and Cal Tech in the Main gym.
