No. 4 UC San Diego Sweeps No. 18 Sonoma State; Tritons Win 23rd Straight In RIMAC Arena

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 4th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team got 23 kills from Sylvia Schmidt en route to a 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 sweep against No. 18 Sonoma State on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. Hillary Williamson added 13 kills on .524 hitting as UCSD won its 23rd consecutive home match dating back to September of 2008. "I though we played very well tonight," said head coach Tom Black. "With Katie (Condon), Sylvia (Schmidt) and Hillary (Williamson), our pins were on fire." With the win, UCSD improves to 27-2, 19-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Seawolves drop to 22-7, 14-7 CCAA.

The 23 kills by Schmidt is her second highest total of the season. Her top mark also came against Sonoma State which was tied a school record of 31 kills on October 10 in Rohnert Park. The senior now has 431 kills this season and has a chance to set the school record at home tomorrow night. The top single-season mark at UCSD is 439 kills by former Triton Bonnie Wilson set during the 2004 season.

Williamson added 10 digs with her 13 kills and Julia Freidenberg added seven kills and a team-high four blocks. Roxanne Brunsting had a busy match with 19 digs. Elaine Chen had 48 assists and six digs as the Tritons outhit SSU .260 - .136.

SSU was led by Keala Peterson with 11 kills and Allyson Sather with seven kills.

In the first set, the Tritons scored the first two points and SSU never led. Schmidt's second kill of the set put the Tritons ahead 10-5. SSU chipped away and pulled within 18-17 on a dig which ended up being a kill by libero Taylor Krenwinkel. After a timeout, UCSD scored three straight points, two coming on Schmidt kills for the 21-17 lead. UCSD would win the set on a Schmidt kill at 25-19.

In the second set, UCSD scored the first five points of the set on a service run by Katie Condon. Schmidt proved unstoppable in the early going, recording five kills in the first six Triton points as UCSD led 6-1. The lead quickly evaporated as SSU rallied to tie the set at 8-8. The Tritons recovered for another small run to lead 15-10 on a pair of SSU errors. With SSU within 22-20, Williamson sent down a kill, only to be responded by an SSU block and kill, and the Tritons led 23-22. Out of a UCSD timeout, Condon recorded a kill for set point and Schmidt sent down the set-ender at 25-22 UCSD.

The third set was close throughout with eight ties and four lead changes. UCSD did lead 18-11 after three consecutive Williamson kills. With UCSD leading 22-16, SSU stormed back with four consecutive blocks, pulling SSU within 24-22. After a UCSD attack error, SSU was within one point. The Tritons got the final point they needed as Freidenberg and Chen put up a block for the final point at 25-23.

UCSD is back in action on Saturday night when it hosts Humboldt State. The UCSD senior class of Lauren Bradley, Elaine Chen, Sylvia Schmidt and Karen Reis will be honored in a brief ceremony before the 7:00 p.m. first serve.
